Museum of Early Trades & Crafts

Madison, NJ

30 March 2024

On a sunny brisk day, we opted to visit Madison, New Jersey. After doing some research beforehand, we found that aside from a cute shopping downtown area and being situated near Drew University, it also was home to a small museum called the Museum of Early Trades and Crafts.

Although small, it had interesting and interactive exhibits. One section was split into different seasons and how people dealt with different aspects of living (farming in the spring/summer, collecting honey, etc.). The opposite end of the museum had numerous local art pieces on display. One room, which looked to be a study or library, had a huge fireplace and a board game set up on the table. Visitors had the option to try playing the board game after reading the initial directions. Another room, which appeared to have been a vault of some sort, had interesting items, including old eyeglasses and a huge magnifying glass. We took home a card that had the basic braille vocabulary on it from this section.

In the near future, they will be opening up a downstairs area for viewable storage. It was currently under construction, so we were only able to view the exhibits on display on the first floor.

It would be interesting to revisit once the viewable storage renovation is complete. Until now, it is a great reason to visit and then later go for a walk in downtown.
