Deep Cut Gardens

17 September 2023

Middletown Township, NJ

Deep Cut Gardens are a great location to visit and enjoy a peaceful sunny day. There are flowers, water pools, a pond where you might catch a glimpse of a frog or toad, and more. It is a perfect place to picnic as well. On top of enjoying the scenery and day, there are plenty of opportunities for great pictures of nature as well.

There is a lot of history behind these gardens dating back to the late 1600s. In 1890, the sheriff took this property for taxes, and part of it ended up being sold to Edward and Teresa R. Dangler. In 1928, the Danglers built a mansion on the hilltop. In the 1930s, Vito Genovese bought the property and fashioned the grounds to resemble Italy. The grounds ended up being a mix of English and Italian garden styles. There are terraced gardens, masonry pergola, water pools, a Mt. Vesuvius rockery, and more. These are the key features one can enjoy today when visiting.

The house standing today is not the original house because it unfortunately burned down. The land saw a few other owners in its time. When Karl and Marjorie Sperry Wihtol purchased it (in 1953 from Dominic Caruso), they built the house one can see today. The gardens and greenhouse were also renovated.

It was Marjorie Sperry Wihtol's will to donate half the property to the county park system and only use it as a park/horticultural purposes. The county then went on the purchase the remaining property.

In 1977, it became a Monmouth County Park and has remained since as a place of enjoyment and education for home gardeners. There is a schedule for different kinds of classes that one can attend.
