Branch Brook Park

Newark, NJ

13 April 2024

This was our first ever visit to Branch Brook Park. We visited with a large tour group to view the Cherry Blossoms and learn about the history of the park. It also happened to be Family Day and attracted many visitors. Aside from pretty blooms, there were vendors, live music, and food trucks in the main "concert" area.

During our tour, we saw many statues in the park (including Mendelssohn, a famous musician, and Olmsted, the man who designed Central Park and two other Newark parks). We also learned that a section of the park is the highest elevation of Newark, NJ and one can even view New York City from it. Historically, it also had the famous Wisteria Walk, often seen on postcards. Today, it is not fully visible, but you can sometimes catch glances of some wisteria still growing. Another photo opportunity is found in the many views of the Sacred Heart Basilica seen from across the lake, or from the highest point of elevation.

It is a beautiful park and definitely worth a visit, even if it is not Cherry Blossom season.
