About Elizabeth, NJ

There are countless historic sites in Elizabeth, NJ. Over three hundred and fifty years ago, Elizabethtown was settled. It was the first capital of New Jersey and the first home to Princeton University. The Elizabeth River was an important means of transporting goods and historic figures (George Washington, Aaron Burr, and Alexander Hamilton to name a few) were drawn to the town for its vicinity to major centers (such as New York) and easy methods of transport (ports, waterways, train, etc). It was a strategic point during the Revolution. The Red Lion Inn (a place where George Washington would stay) is now the Elizabeth Public Library. There are often historic reenactments and events that one can attend at the various historic buildings.
